Old Springfield Library

Old Springfield Library

Springfield's first library building was erected in 1871. It stood on the site of the current library. Prior to this, the City Library Association (a private entity) operated out of space in City Hall.

This building was designed by George Hathorne of New York, and was built at a cost of $100,000. Its architectural style has been called medieval Renaissance. It was constructed mostly of brick with Ohio freestone trimmings.

This building was temporarily moved back onto the Quadrangle to make room for the construction of the present library, and then later demolished.
