Boston and Albany Railroad Office

Boston and Albany Railroad Office

This building stood roughly where the Peter Pan bus terminal now stands, directly north of the railroad arch on Main Street. It was one of the six buildings in Springfield designed by H.H. Richardson.

Haynes Hotel and Post Office

Haynes Hotel and Post Office

The Haynes Hotel was built in 1867, and it is still standing today. It is the current home of Cafe Lebanon, which occupies the space formerly held by Tilly's. You may not know this, but Tilly's got its name from Tilly Haynes, the man who originally owned the building.

The building also housed the city's post office from 1866 to 1879.

SIS bank building

SIS bank building

This is the SIS building. The block was located on the corner of Main and State Streets, on the corner currently occupied by the Mass Mutual Convention Center. It was constructed in 1867, I do not know when it was torn down.

First National Bank block

First National Bank block

This block was located opposite Court Square, where the MassMutual center currently stands. Other visible businesses are:

  • Frank G. Tobey, dealer in hats, caps, and gentleman's furnishing goods
  • N.B. Clark & Co., Manufacturers and Dealers in cigars & tobacco.
  • Moore Brothers, Photographic Artists

Bridge Street from Main Street

Bridge Street from Main Street

This is a photo of Bridge Street, taken from Main St., looking east. Trinity Methodist Episcopal Church is pictured. The church was built in 1869. It sat just below Stearns Square, across from Barnes St.

Bridge Street from the Bridge

Bridge Street from the Bridge

This is a view of Bridge Street, taken from the bridge that used to exist there between Springfield and West Springfield. The Trinity Methodist Episcopal Church is visible in the far background.

The current Memorial Bridge is further south than the old toll bridge, as shown by this modified Google map:

Bill & Shaw's Block

Bill & Shaw's Block

Based on this block being smaller than in the 1878 photo below, I suspect this is an earlier photo, perhaps from 1875. This block stood where Tower Square is now located, on the west side of Main Street, between Bridge and Boland Way (then known as Vernon St.)
